July 31:Alaska and Poland:
I know it is almost 20 days ago that we were in Alaska. With local Bob, great guy and very helpful , and Fred, I raced the Fireweed 400 (miles). I had a great race in beautiful unspoiled Alaska. Except for the fact that I had to spend over 1 hour in the Emergency Room, because of an asthma/pollen attack after 18 hour of racing, I had only 3 men in front of me. to be in the E.R, that was no fun, but I finished the race, a bit later then expected. The 2 other women did not finished and still I was not in last place! Back home I had a doctors visit and he advised to change my medication. In state of treating the symptones , it would worth to try to make my lungs less sensitive for pollen, pollution etc. I had such a strong reaction in Alaska that it looks like that the pollen (from a kind that we not have in Canada or in Holland) were the big trigger for my asthma attack. Same as in the Texas race in early Spring. Then in rainy (no pollen) Slovenia race, I had no problems at all... Now with this new medication I have even more 'air' when I do not do anything... And also more energy. I need just time to see how my body is reacting. Now I am in the plane to Poland for a 1220 km race, mostly through Slovakia and a bit through Poland and Czech and Bulgaria. Rory, who crewed 2 times in the Race Across America is with me. In Poland I have 2 local people with an old fashion VW van!
They are so friendly that we can stay at their place. I feel very energetic and positive and I am really looking forwards to this race (aug 5-8)

July 5 Alaska Between training and resting and racing I enjoy the World Cup soccer and the tour the France! Tuesday we, Fred and I  fly out to Alaska, Fireweed 400,a 400 miles race. I cannot wait to race. On the moment the weather is not the greatest, but every racer will have the same problem.Rain is not a problem, but it will slow you down with average speed.  I found a great local guy, Bob. He is so nice to crew for me and also we can use his condo and his car. That makes my life so much easier. My sponsors are also very nice to me. Trek send me clothing and parts, Biemme clothing, Diadora shoes, Outwet a shirt and Ensure a truckload of the liquid food Ensure. I am very happy with them! Life is good!

I ben erg blij met hun! Life is good!

June 6: earobar

After meeting a nice guy, John , in our store. He decided to replace my earobar from aluminum Whit a carbon one. But made by himself, by hand and from his own design. The problem with the old on was that the connection between the earobar and the stem was (home made by Fred) was too heavy and bulky. Now the model is designed and made from foam. Next step is to make a mall and then make one earobar to try out. It is unbelievable how many hrs John already spend on theis design. I am very excited about it and cannot wait to try it out.

6 juni: ligstuur

May 29: New start

After  a period of mental and health issues I am back on the track. With full energy and highly motivated. I have sport induced asthma and I need to use medication when I do not have enough 'air'. That is hard, because I said always that "sick' is not in my dictionary. Andrew and I also changed thew setup from training. It is a lot different now. I  the beginning of July I am going to race a 'short' 400 miles race in Alsaka. I am so ready top roll. I had some very fast long rides this week and I love the hot Summer weather. I feel really good. Tomorrow I will ride the tour of 170 km in  Muskoka. I am very excited for the preniere of the 'my' Raam film 'Labor of love' on July 19!

29 mei; Een nieuwe start

600 km) race.

April 3: Peter Birkner in memorium...

Today we did get sad news. Peter, 66 past away. He was in my Raam crew two times. Always positive and smiling. I will miss his positive energy. In the last Raam race he was already sick, cancer. He waited with an operation, because he was afraid not to be recovered enough for the long race. After that he had two surgeries... But it did not help him. We met Peter during a vacation in Equator on the beach. We exercised together. Later we visit him two times in Tampa Florida and he was also two times crewing for the Sebring 24 hr race. After my first win of the World Cup, Peter ordered a special celebration pie and took us for Supper. He was always full with life and enjoyed the warm weather in Florida, same as he enjoyed 'my' road bike and the kayak. I will never forget his positive attitude and I will remember him as a real friend Thanks and Bye, Peter

3 April: Peter Birkner in herinnering...

Vandaag kregen we slecht nieuws. Peter, 66 is overleden. We deden work-outs samen .

March 13 : race day .

The race started at 7.00 am. The sun came just over the hills. I started very strong and with 3 men and 1 tandem , I was ahead of the schedule to break the course record. It was warm, 28C on the day and sunny. Everything went very well. After 2 hrs I was in pain with breathing and I did not get enough air... It was if somebody tighten my throat.... After almost 300 km with an average speed of 25.72 km/hr I had to stop. I had in total 8 hrs of breathing problems. My legs were still strong , but my breathing was getting worse. That was horrible, to give up when your legs still wanna go  and when I am leading 1   1/2 hrs ahead of the second women. And I was working to smash the course record. De level of pollen was that day so high, 9.9 on the scale of 0-10. Properly an allergic reaction in combination with a mild case of sport asthma. On Monday I went to the doctor and he did give me an inhaler. Now I can test if it makes a different if this happens again. Of course it could be worse, like braking a leg, but mentally this is very very hard! So next year I want to go back and break the course record. My trainer Andrew and my crew Fran and Kalleen were fantastic. Fran and ELmer, were we stayed with were very friendly and their hospitality was great! We could use their trailer home and Kalleen had just a brand new car that was used as support vehicle. Thanks! And now... Back in training!

My race road bikes(2009 and 2010 TrekMadone 6.9 )

Februari 27 , rest, train and race!

After a week of full rest in Cuba, I was so ready for Andrews hard training! That period was really necessary! Now I am full of energy and my training are going very well. I feel great and I am getting ready for my first World Cup race in the state Texas on March 14-15. It is still Winter here, lots of snow, but also some days with good outside riding. One sunny day I rode over 160 km on my Winter bicycle. The Barmitts are great. Those neoprene covers on my handlebar/grips are keeping the cold air from my hands, so I can wear thinner more breathable gloves. The hard part of Winter riding is to not sweat, because then you are getting cold. But if you ventilate too much, then you get also cold. I spend quiet a bit of time on watching the Olympics, Not only for the pleasure, but also to see how they react after and during races and if they give everything during the race and if they take risks. It gives me sometimes a disappointed feeling that Ultra Marathon Cycling  is not an Olympic Sport

'Scenic ice wall on my way to Bracebridge (to my trainer Andrew)'

January 21:serious training!

I am back in very serious training. Now is the time to get better, faster and stronger, Because there are no races. This means 6 hours of training or more  a day with 1 day off a week. I really want to win the World Cup again and Race across America is still on my wish list. Today I am going to start a 72 hr training with 6 hrs of biking. Of course the biking is inside on the trainer and outside. The weather is cooperating, just below zero and sun on the day! I am excited to ride my new 2010 trek Madone 6.9 bicycle on the trainer. Outside I am riding my recycle bike. I am riding with my new Barmitts ( see sponsors ), neoprene covers over my handlebar grips, So that I can wear thinner breathable gloves and also I can bike for a longer time outside.

21 januari: serieuze training

Januari 3: World Champ is back in training!

I am back in training! After a month of active vacation in Argentina (of course with bicycle), I am Back in the snow and cold air. Biking outside is very challenging, because of the road conditions and weather. With my studded tires I can ride on snow covered and icy roads. Of course not on my race bike, but on my 'recycle' bike. A heavy old mountain bike, No suspension and heavy studded tires. Other then that I do cross training on XCountry skies, snow shoes, running and making my muscles stronger in my and Andrews gym.

I am very happy that I did win the World Cup in Ultracycling (only World Cup races)again and also I finished first in the Ultra Cycle Cup (all races) and in the 24hrs race category. Now I need to be focussed to win it again in 2010!

I want to thanks everyone who was a part of my 2009 success to help me , train me, crew for me , giving me technical and mental support.

3 Januari : Wereldkampioene is terug in training!

Oct 15 : Back from Ireland, Back from The Netherlands and back into training!
After a long Summer of racing and traveling, I am happy to be home. Now I am getting back in training. During the Winter I want to maintain my endurance and get stronger. Under Andrew's supervision it will start soon. In the meantime I did sell my race bike in Ireland to David, a crew member. Now I am very excited! My new road bike, top of the line Trek Madone 6.9 , is in. I cannot wait to ride it. But I have to wait until we do not have
Frost at night anymore. The roads are to slippery with frozen leaves in the morning. Maybe Monday.

October.6: Race around Ireland- final race report:

Final Race Report
The hype and carnival atmosphere of a true World Cup Cycling event was brought to Navan over two evenings last week when the Race Around Ireland started on Tuesday 15th September for solo riders and Wednesday 16th September for Teams.

The event was promoted by Navan Road Club and run in association with Meath Local Sports Partnership and the Ciaran Maree Cancer Research Fund.  The main sponsors for the event were the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Ranked as the second toughest ultra-endurance race in the World by the Ultra-Marathon Cycling Association it was always going to be tough going for all the competitors especially the 11 solo riders who had to finish the event in less than 132 hours. Progress of all the riders was being updated on www.racearoundireland.com.

This was the first event of its kind in Ireland and it attracted the top ultra distance riders in the World including the World Champion Caroline Van Den Bulk and current World Cup leader Fabio Biasiolo as well as runner up in Race Across America 2008 Mark Pattinson.

Fabio Biasiolo did what he said he was going to do and cycled for over 48 hours with no sleep in an attempt to break the other riders. At the half way point in Limerick he led Irish rider Joe Barr by over three hours. Joe continued to apply pressure with specacular riding in the Kerry mountains to cut down the time difference when a crash near Mizen Head almost ended his race. With his bike destroyed and a badly damaged foot he mounted his back up bike and continued to ride on to catch Fabio.

By the time they reached Kinsale the time difference was now only an hour between Joe and Fabio with the World Cup leader not taking and rests and Joe cycling on a different strategy of small breaks every couple of hours. At this point all but Fabio, Joe, Mark Pattinson, Holger Roethig and Caroline Van Den Bulk had pulled out with riders suffering from injuries, fatigue or illness.

Just then news came back to headquarters that Fabio was withdrawing from the race due to medical problems and this now put Joe into the lead with Mark closing the gap.  Despite serious foot injuries from the earlier crash Joe Barr put in an inspirational ride to maintain the lead over Mark and put himself into the history books as the first person to win the World Cup Event of the Race Around Ireland in 108 hours and 12 minutes with Mark Pattinson finishing in second place in 112 hours and 58minutes. German Rider Holger finished the event in 128 hours 21 minutes.  Caroline Van Den Bulk arrived three hours later and was the only lady to finish and earn herself valuable World Cup points which will help her regain the title.

The team event was a hotly contested affair with favourites An Post hoping to take top honours.  The An Post team who were led by Padraig Marrey were also taking part in a ground breaking study by DCU (Dublin City University), which had them followed by a van that can only be described as something you would see in a storm chaser movie.  Every heart beat, breath and pedal stroke was recorded day and night and fed back to the van for analysis.  The team - No Prior Experience  led out by Sky Sports presenter Graham Little had other ideas as they took advantage of mishaps to the An Post team proceeding to take the lead early and never let up until they came home victors, finishing the 1350 miles in 67 hours and 27 minutes – one hour a head of An Post.  The team’s performance was filmed as part of a documentary, some of which will be shown on the new Sky Sports show “Sporting Ireland”.

After a long battle between Team Tailteann and Swords CC where only 5 minutes separated them with 100 miles to go Team Tailteann finally pulled away in the final stage to come third, one hour a head of Swords CC who were down to three competitors after one of the team had to pull out due to injury.
The English two person team of Brian Welsh and Stacey Eccles finished the course in 4 days 10 hours and 16 minutes.

The event was hailed as a success by all the competitors with beautiful scenery and route toughness given in equal measure. The Race Around Ireland is already being planned for next year with registration opening mid October. With riders from around the World already trying to sign up for this very unique challenge the organisers are looking at it being bigger and better.

September 26: Race around Ireland
On the moment I am recovering from the hard Ireland race. This race was vey hard. Not only because of the 2180 km, but also because of the uneven pavement, the endesss climbing (sometimes 25%!) , the cold temperatures at night, the long nights and the hard navigation.
The weather was very good for ireland. suny and clear, but with lots of wind. Also for the crew it was hard, siting for 5 days in a car is not easy. Lucky I had 4 drivers/navigators and 2 vehicles. In pairs they went from car to car. 1 car behind me and 1 car went ahead for sleeping and cooking. Andrew had the hardest job, because he stayd in the car behind me for 5 days. Only 3 men and I finished this race and we set a course record.
De course was erg scenic and we saw all the high lights from Ireland

26 september: Race around Ireland

Sept 13: Dublin,

After a great flight we did arrive in Dublin. Donncha our crew member was standing ready to pick us up on the airport. First we had a delay of 1 hr.
but they could put us on a flight that was leaving 1 hr earlier. But because that plane was full, they upgrade us for better seats, what cost normally 1000 dollars extra. We rest and did put bikes together. Tomorrow we have bike and vehicle inspection and we will met more of our crew members. Weather is clear and sunny 20C, not usually for Ireland

13 september:Dublin

Sept 12: We go to Ireland!

Finally I did get my crew together! Andrew and Marc from Canada Dave from England Donncha and Cathal from Ireland! We are ready!!!! www.racearoundireland.com

Sunday August 23: For which race do i train?

Finally time to update my webpage. I was very busy with training. Also my laptop is very sick. Hopefully I do get a new one. We are still out of our house and we live in Ted's house. He is so very nice and generous to let us use his house. So now take care also of his dog Max, a beatifull golden retriever.
In the last couple weeks I did long, long hours of training, and in between I had periods of shorter (read 120 km) rides a daty with lots of excercises for my upperbody. The weather is very warm with warm nights. That works well, because I do need to wear too much clothing. I did even en overnight
(28 hrs) ride. Joleen was so nice to drive behind me during the night!
Today I am off and enjoy muskoka from Ted his house.
I am getting really ready for my next race, but I do not know which one yet.
I really want to race Ireland, but still I am working on drivers. If this is not going to work then I go to a race in the U.S. Hopefully with the help of the organizer I will be able to have enough drivers.
From Trek I did receive some clothing and parts, very nice of them!

July 11: World cup of Ultracycling 2008 Award Finally I did get the award for my World Cup 2008. By mail I received it from the UMCA, Ultra Marathon Cycle Association . Surprise was that I won two other divisions! Also I did win the Ultra Cycle Cup for Females 25-49 years and on top of that in 24 hrs races the first place for females 25-49 years! I am happy! On this moment I am leading the same categories For 2009.

European Championship Ultracycling: Radmarathon, July 3-4, Wangen an der Aare in Switzerland, 2nd place! 28 hours and 32 min. On July 30 Andrew and I flew to Zurich in Zwitserland. We were lucky with a straight flight. Then an hour train ride to Wangen an der Aar. A small old village in beautiful Swiss. The Italian crew arrived after a 600km car ride. We stayed all in the B&B. Next day was for organizing car and resting. On July 3 at 12.25 I was on the start of the race. The weather was great, 29C on the day and 14C at night. Only in the beginning of the evening we had a small shower and a couple hours thunder storm. I did use only a rain jacket for the thunder storm. But because of the nice temperature my shorts and shoes were drying quick. The first 18 hours went very well, an average speed of 27 km/hr. Then the tiredness was slowing me a bit down. But Andrew talked me to the finish line in the last 30 min with an average speed of over 30 km/hr. I am very happy with my second place, for sure because my average speed was 5 km/hr faster then in Slovenia. The next day we flew back to Canada. Now a week of resting. Monday training is starting Again. The bonus for this event came after the race. My dad gave me prize money for my good result! Thanks dad.

Europees kampioenschap Lange afstand fietsen: Radmarathon, 3-4 juli, Wangen an der Aar in Zwitserland. 2de plaats! Dankjewel vadertje!

June 28 Ready for Switzerland! I am ready to go! Training is done, bike is in the box and on Tuesday morning I will pick up Andrew, my trainer and we drive to Toronto. After a straight flight to Zurich we will take the train to Wangen an der Aare, were we stay in a B&B with our Italian crew. They come by car and carry a spare bike with me. On July 3 the start is at noon. The time limit For this 720 km race is 33 1/2 hours. In different categories and distances , over 200 riders are participating. Hopefully I receive new clothing and shoes from my Italian sponsors, Biemme and Diadora. They are going to send it to my crew from Italy, before they are leaving. I am very ready to race and I cannot wait to know if I can beat the course record, 29 hours and 45 min. Also I am very happy That Andrew will be there to take care of me before, during and after the race. He will not driving the car, but focussing on me, like feeding, giving me mentally support and taking care of riding tactics. I am counting days....

June 6: Go Green,Go Dutch, Go Bike On May 30 I drove from Bracebridge to Oshawa (bit east from Toronto), were we stayed by the Family Vanderheyden (Dutch roots). On May 31 we were invited to be a part of the Go Green, Go dutch, Go Bike event. This is the annual event in Toronto to promote cycling, not only as recreational, but also for community. In combination with this event was the charity to donate From the entree fees children bicycles for needy children. It started with a bike ride through Toronto and it was ending on Nathan Philips Square. There they invite me on the stage to say some words and to donate out store bicycle to Charity. It was a sunny day, but with a lot of cold wind. Over 200 people were participating. In the meantime I am , after a recovery period, back in full training. Only 3 weeks left to train hard for the European Championship in Switzerland on June 3-4. Because of the long days (daylight) I can train longer outside. I am trying out some other seats, because I am still tiding my 'Cadillac' a leather mountain bike seat. It is hard to find a good seat, because not a lot of real women designed road race seats. I am very happy that I have an experienced Italian crew for the Swiss race !

Go Green, Go Dutch, Go Bike.

May 7-11 Postonja, Slovenia On May 4 I did arrive with Andrew in beautiful Slovenia. After the couple days of organizing and preparing ourselves, We were ready for the race. I had a radio interview and lots of attention from the media. By the pre race meeting They had a special place for me to sit, by the famous 4 time RAAM winner Jure Robic. People in Slovenia are very friendly and helpful Our Slovenian crew was helping with organizing the van for the race. They were great! On the day before the race I slept until 4.00 PM, Because the start was at 7.00 PM. Then I was eating and after that we went to the start area. The start was a big party, lots of music and people. The course goes from Postonja to the coast, then over Nova Gorica, Col and Idrija towards North, were the highest and longest (10 km) Ascent to pass Vrisic is.following is Gorensjka, Koroska and Stajerska to the eastern part and then in Prekmurje it turns back towards Postonja on the Southers side of Slovenia. The weather was a blast, sun and 23C on the day, nights were dampy with 8 C! On one moment of the race, during a nasty 16% never ending uphill, Marko started to play the harmonica. That surprise brought me up that mountain! My crew was great! Of course Andrew did not sleep either, he was watching me, feeding me or motivating me. On the end of the race we were all very tired, but happy, first place and 8 hrs ahead of the 2nd women.

Mijn crew was fantastisch!!!!

May 2: ready to roll!

I am very excited to go to Slovenia. The start will be in Postonja on May 7 and the finish will be on may 10. On Sunday  May 3   I will fly out with Andrew my trainer. Over there he will prepare me further for the race. I will be prepared for everything. Rain, sun, flats etc. From Darijan I can borrow his mtb for a nasty 10 km downhill with a surface of flat rock Also he is so nice to let me use his road bike if my bike brakes down. I have lots of luggage, because I Can expect every kind of weather. 1200 km is too long for 1 set of clothing. Even full rain gear is in my Suitcase. The forecast is 5-7C at night, 18C-24C on the day, but with showers. Nobody died yet from rain. So we just go for it! Including me there are 3 women racing, 1 from Tjechoslovakia and 1 from Italy. But there are 50 men to compete with.  For people who like to know more www.dos-extreme.si  Do not forget To click on the English flag for the English language.

April 19: training, training and training.... In the last week I did a lot of 6 and 8 hrs rides. The weather was good. Still big temperature differences. At night a couple degrees below zero and on the day 15C with sun. Because of the low humidity it feels way warmer. But the nasty North east wind was there too. The roads have still a lot of sand and that is why I still ride my cross bike. Now a big week of lots of kilometers and then I am going to slow down for the race. The snow is almost gone and now you see lots of spontaneous water falls.

April 8 : 66 hrs awake and 1 nap of 38 minutes.... After a couple days of hard training I have now 2 rest days. Last week on Tuesday I bikes for 12 1/2 hrs. Nice sunny weather. I came home at 19.30 and at 21.30 Andrew did let me know that at Midnight my 48 hrs training will start. First 24 hrs no sleep and only biking outside or on the trainer. The next 24 hrs, bike as much as possible and stay active, exercises were also allowed. In the last 24 hrs, 1 nap of maximum 45 minutes. That was a very, very hard training. It was because in my next race I will bike over 50 hrs and hopefully 1 nap will do the job. So this is my last long training with sleep deprivation. Do not forget that I was already biking before the 48 hr. Training. In total I was 66 hrs awake with 1 nap. You can imagine that I was very tired and in the first night after the training I slept 12 hrs non stop. The next day I was "off" ! I did not want to bike at all. On Saturday I biked 8 hrs and it was sunny. Sunday we received suddenly 15 cm snow! Sunday , Monday and Tuesday I was training. Today and Tomorrow I have rest days. Catch up with life, work and lets recover the muscles! I am glad that I did the long training. I was happy with myself and now the last period of hard training for the Race Across Slovenia! In this time of the year riding outside can be a challenge. Suddenly you have lots of snow or you see those signs....

March 31   2009 Today a sunny day 10C. So..... Cycling outside. But because the day started with -4C, after a couple hours, every hour I took a layer of clothing off. I start with neoprene covers for my shoes, a rain jacket and a rain pants . The ride started at 7.00am and ended at 19.30 . I enjoyed the beautiful nature . Some roads are damaged by the frost, put holes and cracks. That keeps me awake! When I was home, I discovered that I had a flat on the front. Great that it did not happen during my ride!

Hwy 118  west toward Bracebridge . Like a canyon

Rivers are open, but most if the lakes has still ice in it

31 maart   2009 Vandaag een zonnige 10C dag. Dus... Buiten fietsen.

March 20: Today it is Spring! Finally Spring arrived! I cannot complain about the weather. Sunny days, colder nights and I did in the last couple days another 3 rides out side. One even in shorts! Yesterday I had a real Andrews "Spartan" training day. For almost 9 hours we took cedar trees out of his bush. Pulling, pushing, carrying on the shoulder. Also with a big cutter, I cut branches off the trees so that it is easier to carry them. The softer snow (it was +4C) was making this training even harder. But with Andrews words "Harder is better" I finished the long day. Sore, tired and exhausted I went home and slept very well.

20 Maart:Vandaag is de lente begonnen! Eindelijk lente!

March 10, Winter or Spring.... After a weekend of Spring weather and riding outside on my steel horse, my Winter bicycle, I was back on my trainer Yesterday. Riding outside was hard, the hills and the wind are element what is difficult to train inside. In this time of the year we have such a temperature differences. Yesterday I did shovel the driveway , we had 10 cm of snow overnight, in my shorts. Also I was x country skiing on the lake in my shorts! Today it will be an inside-on-the-trainer day with some upper body activities outside. The temperature will be +3C, but Tomorrow we are going to have a huge wind and dropping temperatures until -10 on the day and -20C at night , for the next 2/3 days. But I am looking toward the sunny end of the week and weekend so I can ride outside again. We still have a meter of snow in the bush, but that will melt in the next two weeks.

10 maart ,Winter of lente....

March 2 March already! time is flying. But the time on my trainer inside not, but it needs to be done. At least biking outside will be so much better. On the end of the week we are going to get sunny -3C weather, so properly I can ride outside on my winter bicycle with the studs in my tires. Our road is still snow covered. Not only the temperature is important, but also the wind. I cannot wait until I can ride my road bike outside. Virginia is still working on the film. On the end of this week, I can watch the 4 hrs version, which need to be reduced to a much shorter version. I am excited!

2 maart Het is alweer maart! Tijd vliegt.

Feb 27 Back in training! Last week, after my surgery at my eyelids, it was time to go back in training. On Monday we drove to Toronto to get my stitches out. It is healing fast! After a couple days outside training. I am back on my bicycle on the trainer. It felt good again. It is still Winter, but we have beautiful sunny days, like in Florida. There we celebrate my World Cup titel with Peter, who took us out for supper and let made a pie for me, Thanks Peter!

Soon I will decide with Andrew what my next race will be. But in the meantime I will train hard under his strict eye. I hope we have an early Spring, so I can ride my roadbike outside.

27 februari, Terug in training!

Florida Feb 14 & 15.
After a week of being in Florida I started well rested for the race in Sebring. The start was at 6.30 am. It was 14C and clear. After 3 (3.7 miles) short lops on the famous Sebring racetrack, I headed out on a big day loop of 90 miles. The sun was out and in a sjort time it was 28C. The wind was light. I was flying, 34 km/hr! Did 200 km in the first 6 hrs. Then the wind was picking up, over 25 km hr. After the big loop I went for 9 times on a mid loop of 11 miles. And just before darkness I started my first loop of the
49 loops on the race track. Everyone was hoping and expecting that the wind should die, but I did not. It was there the rest of the race. I did rafky 4 loops in an hour. The night was clear, but because of the wind and later the damp I had to put legwarmers and a jacket on. Do not expect that the track has beautifull pavement.. It did not had that, more big concrete pieces with seams between, but no traffic and very wide. My average speed went down, because of tireness and the wind. W women told me during the race that she did already 375 miles, I was not even close, but I rode my own race. I did
385 miles (times 1.6=km) and finished first..... The women properly ment 275 miles. Also I did break the course record in my age group, but I was 15 km short to break the overall women record of 401 miles. The record holdster raced also, but she was over 50 miles behind me.
Fred and Peter did a great job with being my support and the hard training of Andrew were worth every penny! Thanks!

January 26 :

Last week it was a week of very, very hard training. Sometimes inside on the trainer and in the gym (home & Andrew), but also outside. Lots of people on Harp Lake Rd, they think I am crazy... I was walking and pulling a car tire on a rope behind me around the lake (2x). This road is really hilly!!! On Saturday I did a 20 km snowshoe run on Andrew his hilly rail by -22C. I Had to beat my time of last week and.... I did! I was exhausted. On Sunday Fred and I did a 30 km XC ski loppet, the annual loppet in Arrowhead P.P. in Huntsville. We are both 'self-learners' and the 30 km is long. But we did it and we were proud. Bonus was that I was 3th out of the 4 women in my category Today is a totally day off! My muscles do not even want to do anything. Now the last hard training for the Sebring race which is in February.

26 januari:

I was uitgeput.

Jan 14:

Yesterday, after a cold -35C night at 6.00 am we drove to the tv studio of A-Channel in Barrie, 1 1/2 hr drive South from here. In the Barrie area we saw car ending up  in the snow banks because of black ice on the left lane. But we arrived safe by A-Channel. It was interesting to see how everything is organized to make a live breakfast show. It was a short 3 min interview, live. During the interview I had to sit on my trainer, free advertising for Trek! I did wear a nice Biemme jersey. from my clothing sponsor. In my water bottle case was a bottle of Ensure, the liquid food that I use. Soon I will receive a new load of that for my training and races. After the interview we left and rove further to Vaughan were Winter rep  show was, we looked at the new clothing and skies for Winter 2009-2010. Then we drove home. Because this was my day off, I relaxed and I went in the hottub, what is good for my sore muscles. Today it will be one of the coldest days of the winter, -35 at night and -23 C on the day. So Andrew did design a training day inside on the trainer. Tomorrow i will be training by Andrew.

Jan 4 :

It is real Winter, cold nights, but sunny days. Still too much snow or too cold to ride my bike outside. So then we use the trainer. As cross training I do snowshoeing and cross country skiing . Since 3 days the lake is safe to ski. My dogs love to go with me and are as tired as I am. It is not easy to live in a country with real Winters for ultra cycle training, but we make the best of it. I cannot ride long outside, but on the other side, after lots of hours on the trainer, riding outside is much easier.

Dec 28:

This is upperleg training in deep snow on snowshoes :

Yes!!! I did win the 2008 World Cup Ultracycling!!! I collect the most points! Virginia is still working on the documentary of My Race Across America 2008.  After a short break in The Netherlands I am back in my training schedule. Now I am more often on the trainer, because of the snowy Winter weather. We never had so much snow in December. Also I am a lot on my snowshoes. My next race is the 24 hrs race in Sebring Florida in February. I did that race 2 years ago and I want to beat my time.

and in dutch (special request):

Ja!!! Mijn volgende race is the 24 uurs race in Sebring in de staat Florida in Amerika.

Nov 15 & 16

Desafiaso 24hrs race; Nov 15 & 16: It was a very hard race. Sun was shining and it was not warm, it was hot, 38C in the shade. At night is was a very nice 25C with full moon. The wind was blowing non stop 30-35 km hr!! I did break my record of drinking water, over 15 liters! Never did that before. That was on the day 1 waterbottle for 2 laps (33 km). After 12 hrs of racing I did 21 laps. The woman who won the race did 21 and a half. In lap 23 my gear cable broke in the shifter. It could not be fixed and I borrowed a cheaper shifter from the local mecanics. That worked well for 3 laps. Then the cable stretched and I had skipping gears for the rest of the race. With my ´creative shifting´I finished the race with 520 km, 38 laps. I was second. The first woman had 42 laps. Including the men I was 5th. With this circumstances I was very happy. I did not go off my bicycle, only to pie. This race was very well organized and in the team were a lot of pro-riders Bye, Caroline

Nov 1

Yesterday it was Spring again! 15C and biking in shorts! The sun was out, but also a nasty strong North West wind. But that was a good training, because In Brasil there is a blowing wind 24 hrs a day! I completed my 8 hr ride and Today it will be my last 8 hr ride before the Brasil Race. The nights are frosty, so I need to ride my x-bike were I have a carrier on the back with a bag on top for my clothing. This will be my last race in 2008.

October 21 :

After the 26C from Monday last week, we now have..... I almost can not say the word yet....snow!!! Lucky, only Today. The rest of the week will be sunny and aroumd 8 C.My bike is ready for the trainer, only I am not ready yet. But wht can you do. Yesterday we picked up Andrew and Hanna from the airport. So my 'freedom' is gone! Hard training now, for the Brasil race. Yesterday I had a day off and that was really neccesary, I even did not want to bike, so tired was my body. Now back to real life!

October 13 :

Last week was my first week of hard training after the race in Texas. Lots of intervals! The weather is a blast. The leaves have beautiful colours! Andrew is still In Arizona and is training me by phone. Yesterday I was off training and Today it will be the last, I think, Summer day, 24C! One day to enjoy the colours. Next week the leaves will be on the ground. My next race will be a 24 hors race in Fortaleza, Brasil on Nov 15 & 16. Fred will be my suport over there. Bye, Caroline

September 30:

Sore, tired and very happy I came back from Cleburne, TX, Usa. There I did the Tejas 500 miles race, a 800 km race with a time limit from 48 hours. The course record was 42.21 hrs. The start was at 6.00 pm and after 1 loop I had to use my lights. Andrew came from a client in Arizona and was the greatest support for me over there. He served me with my drinks , food, clothing and his mental support. The temperature on the day was 38C in the shade. Most of the course was in the open sun. At night the temperature dropped to 10C. I raced very hard and did not wanted to take a break. After 32 hrs and 5 minutes i finished in first place by the women category and 5th overall by the men. Also I smashed the course record with over 9 hours. I was so happy!!!! Now I am back in Canada. This week I will focus on recovery (legs) and next week I am back in training.

Bye, Caroline

September 22:

In the beginning of September we went to the Bicycle show for retailers in Montreal. There I found two new sponsors. Diadora cycle shoes and Biemme clothing , both from Italie. There were asking if i wanted to wear their products. I really liked the Diadora shoes. They are so nice to send me 3 different pairs of shoes and some clothing. After a long hard training time, I decided to go for a race to see how much I did recover in the last months. This was a time of hard training with lots of hours in the seat. Also I am back in shape with my upper body. Tuesday I will fly out to Dallas in Texas, were a 800 km race starts on Thursday at 6.00pm and end after max 48 hrs on Saturday 6.00 pm. I will meet Andrew in Dallas, because his client in Arizona is flying him to my race..After the race he will go back for 2 weeks and I am flying home. I am very excited about this race, never did 800 km race what started at 6.00 in the evening. that means that i need to go for two nights on my bicycle.

Bye, Caroline

August 18:

Hard work and rest:

The last week I was fully in hard training. Lots of hours in exercises and on the bicycle. The training was very hard for my legs with lots of long distance rides and sprints and intervals. I spend lots of hours on my legs. Saturday was a day off and I really needed one! So on Sunday I was back for the bicycle for 12 hrs. I was curious how I was handling this ride after hard training and the Raam race. The weather was beautiful and there was not too much wind in the morning. the sun was out and it was a nice 26C. I tried to eat a kind of date-bread, home made. It worked well. I was very happy that I did 294 km in the hilly Muskoka. Virginia finished my port folio DVD. it looks nice and soon it will be on this web page

bye, Caroline

August 7:

The last week was a week of hard exercises. Up to 5 hours of nonstop exercises. This is bringing me back in shape! And do not forget that I was already biking for 60 hilly kilometers to Andrew. After a short break (after all those exercises) I was of course biking back home. In this time of the year Andrew is very busy and I am exercising with lots of different people. the most i like to exercise with Brad May, the NHL hockey player. He is very exterminated and hard working with lots of humor. Today I came back in a huge thunderstorm and almost 3 hrs of rain, but that can happen in a race too.... so... good training! yesterday i did visit Virginia and we looked at some footage of Raam. Nice filming! Beautiful scenery and lots of hilarious moments! On the end of this year the film will be ready. It will take a lot of time to do this job right and to have permission of al kind of musician to use their songs

July 27:
The last week I did ride a lot more. My strength is coming back. I still do enjoy all the nice e mails. I really did not know that I was such a inspiration for other people. Also I did met Sky, a 23 years old women, who is biking across Canada for charity. (See photo, attachment). She wanted to meet me and we figured quickly out that we both loves bicycling! And that she is riding the same bicycle as I do. It is Summer now and very busy with traffic around Huntsville. Our Main street is the most dangerous place to bike. Also there is a lot of construction going on, to get the roads prepared for Winter. The weather is warm, 24-28C, with some rain and thunderstorms at night. I cannot believe how fast this Summer is going!

July 23:
Click here for an article in the in MUSKOKA-NEWS.

July 11:
Back in hilly Huntsville: After my short break in The Netherlands I am back in Huntsville. In The Netherlands I did some recovery rides on flat terrain. Now it is almost 3 weeks after the race. I am very happy with all the messages by email and in my guest book of my web page. Even people who I do not know were giving me a very positive message. Now back to reality. Yesterday I went slowly back into the first steps of training. I exercised by Andrew and then I had my first ride back home 60 km on my road bike. In the meantime Fred did sell my two other (older models ) bicycles. So now I have left my white bike. That is the bike what I used the most during the race. On the moment Huntsville is very warm and we have some strong winds. My sleeping is getting better and I am not so often awake anymore. I want to thanks everybody who was supporting during the race!
Bye, Caroline

June 26:
Hanna and I arived safe in The Netherlands. We slept in the plane. After being picked up by my dad, I was resting and I did my first bike ride after the race. it was an easy relsaxing and recreational ride on a city bike. We did 20 km. I was very hapy to be back on my bicycle. It was a very nice sunny day.

June, 23 : From Caroline herself:

Early in the morning we came home in Huntsville. The ride home went good. No problems on the border. I slept most of the time in the Grey Turtle. We were all tired and dove in our beds. In the last day I did a lot of thinking. One one side I was proud that I did reach the finish line. On the other side I was disappointed that it was not in the time limit. I was very upset that I had to 'wait' 8 hrs on that one day that we had the storm and the waiting on the gas station. This is not about being right or wrong, but about what is fair. When the organization is promising me to give me the waiting hrs back, then I found it not fair that they did not do that. I like to race a gain , but first 'we need to talk' This race was a great experience for me. I am recovering very fast. Legs are good\ and I need to sleep a lot. My eyes are getting better and soon I go for two weeks to Holland for, reunion, dentist and family. In the evening Iwas invited for a councilor meeting in Huntsville, The mayor was there and gave me a 'muskoks' book with a personal note in it.

June, 21 : The last crew-update from Virginia:

Hello from Annapolis!

Well, we made it! What a ride it has been! Although Caroline did cross the finish line, she was three hours past the cut off (see caption below) so she did not finish "officially" but the finish line was still amazing! In fact, I think she had more people there than people usually do. Everyone was so excited for her, from her crew to perfect strangers. It was a great finish line! And no one treated it any differently than reaching an "official finish, even the owner of the race explained at the finish line that just finishing is amazing, in the last 27 years only 220 people have finished the solo race. Some

It is not called "The hardest race in the world" for nothing. There were lots of challenges along the way, not to mention that sleep deprivation changes you, both Caroline and the crew. Oh well, lack of sleep kept us on our toes! Caroline averaged 40 minutes of sleep a day, the crew would sleep in intervals of catnaps, 1hr, 2hr, 4hr. If you were lucky once or twice you may have slept for six hours. But that was a real stroke of luck:)

"Caroline van den Bulk did not complete the RAAM course in the time requirement. She ended her official RAAM race at Time Station #52 in Mt.
Airy, Maryland, but at this time is completing the route to the finish line in Annapolis. Caroline completed 2,959.6 miles of the race in 12 days, 21 hours, and 10 minutes."

I have to say being at that finish line has been one of the coolest experiences I have shared with a team of people. I was totally shaking while trying to take shots with the camera, I was just so excited for her. It was incredible, and Caroline was happy, smiling, and rode across the finish line at sunset, and then jumped into the Atlantic!

A piece of the finish line was cut off for Caroline to keep, as a token of a rider who is given notice of an official DNF (official Did Not Finish)and decides to keep going anyway. the last person who they did this for was a solo man 1998.

Lots of riders who finished throughout the day all drove back to the finish line form their hotels to cheer her through so that was great. And there were quite a few young families with their kids (particularly young girls) that came down to see "the" female rider cross the finish line.

And she still had no pain, and the eye drops I found for her in WV finally worked to help her eyes.

Unfortunately Janet Christiansen had to stop due to medical reasons close to the end, so Caroline was the only solo woman this year that crossed the finish line. Our fellow Canadian's did well too, Ryan Correy of Calgary was this years youngest finalist at 25.

After arriving to the peer in Annapolis, we went out and celebrated and shared in the excitement with many other riders, crew, media, officials and forth.

It was a great ride. Caroline was incredible to watch. The country side was amazing. The crew was amazing. Between our crew, and the others that you get to know in a race like this we have met a lot of really cool people.

Some of us have made good connections both personally and professionally. I loved the experience, and have found a new network to be a part of with my camera and skill sets. RAAM is just one ultra cycling event, seems like a great way to see the world.

As for Caroline, she will be updating her site when she gets home, and add to the stories. When asked if she will be back in 2009, she did not give a straight answer yet...we will see:)

See you back in Muskoka!

June, 21 : The last report from the RAAM site:

THE SUN SET ON RAAM 2008: Caroline Van den bulk rode into Annapolis this evening, just before sunset, as the very last rider, marking the end of the 27th Annual Race Across America.

It was a bitter sweet moment for Caroline Van den bulk when she reached the Race Across America finish line this evening. For although she had completed the 3014 mile course of this 27th annual event, she unfortunately missed the official cut-off by nearly three hours. So she missed out on getting the finisher's medal and the presentation ceremony that goes with it. She did receive the accolades of the crowd, which actually, was larger than those in attendance for some of the official finishers.

CAPTION: THE BEST CREW.. Carline Van den Bulk and the crew that helped her, motivated her, coached her, fed her and did everything but carry her to get her to the finish.

After riding under the finish banner she stopped and was instantly embraced one by one by each of her crew members. She thanked them all, calling them the best crew I could ever think about having, and she especially thanked her personal trainer Andrew Urban, who she calls When you do this race you get where you don't know anything of what you are doing, except for pedaling. Without him I would not be standing here. He was my brain!

Urban was with her for her '07 RAAM assault which ended in Colorado . And it appears his training has helped her to improve, It felt very good that moment when I pass the place where I stopped last year. And it felt great! And then shortly after that we had the halfway point. The halfway point in Kansas is a minor victory that comes at a time when RAAM riders need it most, for like many racers, Van den Bulk called Kansas the hardest section, Because it is so boring. Just nothing forever!

Many RAAM pundits had been concerned about her ever since she took to walking toward the summit of the highest climb on this year's RAAM, La Manga Pass , at 10,275 feet . Yeah, I didn't want to kill myself, she said of her time spent walking, So I walked for a couple of minutes. Once over the summit she enjoyed a long descent, Where you can pedal without much effort, very good recovery. It was very fast and I had to wait for my follow car!

The days after Colorado have been much like that day, up and down. She had good miles, bad miles, took a spill and skinned a knee. Some nights, despite her fatigue, she couldn't get to sleep, I stop for sleep, lay down, but only get twelve minutes sleep. But in the end she's glad that she did it. I always say, I am doing things that other people are dreaming of. But for this one, you need to be prepared. In some races they joke, ‘If you are not ready for this, stay home.' I think this one is the most serious. If you have money enough and time enough and support enough of course you can come out and try something out.  But if you are not really prepared, forget it.

MY BRAIN: Without Andrew Urban to do the thinking and decision making when Caroline was no longer able, she never would have made it to Annapolis .

June, 20 : from the RAAM site :

Caroline van den Bulk did not complete the RAAM course in the time requirement. She ended her official RAAM race at Time Station #52 in Mt. Airy, Maryland, but at this time is completing the route to the finish line in Annapolis. Caroline completed 2,959.6 miles of the race in 12 days, 21 hours, and 10 minutes. Please stay tuned to the RAAM blog for more details from Caroline and her crew from Annapolis later today.

June, 20 : Unfortunately Caroline didn't make it to the finish in time ! more news will follow.

June, 20 : 130 miles to go !!

June, 19 : She now is the only woman solo left in the race. She is at Timestation 48 ...220 difficult miles to go !!

June, 19 : 360 miles to go !!

June, 18 : from the RAAM site :

One look at Caroline van den Bulks website and you know her goal is simple. The Canadian bike shop owner wants to finish. Now, less than a day from Maryland, her dream looks like it will be realized. van den Bulk has pushed through the Californian desert, suffered the heat of Monument valley, gone through the monotonous flats of the Midwest, and now is facing the steep climbs of the West Virginia back country. Despite a fall earlier in the race she is still riding strong. Annapolis is in site for Caroline van den Bulk, and she is still pedaling.

June, 17 : Read the latest update from Virginia :

Hello Hello from Indiana! So, big things are brewing:)This morning at 3:30am Caroline made the 2000 mile marker ahead of schedule by 1.5 hrs! We are all totally pumped for her. Right now she is having her first sleep in a bed for three hours! We will see what this is like waking up, hopefully not to hard. Caroline is of course tired, but today I was in the passenger seat and she waved me up to talk to keep her awake, so we did this as much as we were allowed and I of course filmed everything. There are a lot of officials around, with the amount of officials there are you sort of feel the same way as driving between Huntsville and TO with all the cops waiting for you. They are everywhere:) Six penalties and you are officially disqualified. We have three so far, and one pending. Two of these were really caused by complete fatigue of Caroline, in talking with other crews this seems to be quite normal. In catching up with Caroline this morning on the road she mentioned that she is still feeling great, happy to be on her bike, happy to be having this adventure, frustrated with being exhausted, but all in all she has no pain, which she credited to her trainer Andrew Urban. Some of the riders are starting to ride with neck braces, and back braces; Caroline's theory on no pain is that she spends 364 days before the race with Andrew producing her "built in" braces, which so far this theory holds up! So we have no pains, but we do have fatigue, and that is bloody interesting to watch! Yesterday during filming Caroline made one of several sudden stops that have happened over the last 24 hours especially, because she was hallucinating. My personal favourite was when she pulled over to ask why we were going twice around the same loop (yesterday in the farm lands of MO). All the while while she was very much out of sorts she looked at me and said, "it's just like where you live in Hidden Valley it is one big circle." All I could think was, we are 1900 miles into biking with almost zero sleep, she remembers from being at my house once, that I live in Hidden Valley. This crew compared to others has no drama, the real drama of this adventure is talking to Caroline and watching and hearing her go in and out of real life, and the place that all of these cyclists go at some point each day. But of course it is more and more common now. A special note and thank you to our hosts last night of time station 33, which is at their beautiful farm house in MO, everyone that passes through received a shower and a BBQ! And of course Fred utilized their kitchen to make Caroline her pancakes:) Yet again another really cool couple that welcomed us into their house. All in all, things are great, it is an adventure, I couldn't possible narrow it into these emails, all the more reason for the video:) Caroline is an amazing athlete and we are all super proud of her and excited for Annapolis! Will write again soon! Cheers! Virginia Hastings

June ,15 : A small report rom the RAAM site:

Caroline Van De Bulk was still riding, gamely picking up time and ignoring the pain in her skinned knees and under her cracked helmet.

Van De Bulk lost the helmet, hurt her knee, lost time and was forced to forgo sleep after dumping her bike in heavy fog. So riding after 45 minutes of sleep, she still joked, “At least the pain in my right knee is distracting me from the soreness in my left!”

Competition is fierce, and no one wants to abandon the race they trained so hard for. Van De Bulk is just such a competitor, so watch for a strong finish from her.

June ,15 : And again a message from Virginia :

Well Caroline has reached time station 31 in Camdenton, MO! She has 1164 miles left! Which translates into being VERY close to the 2000 mile Check Point which Caroline has to make by 5:00am Monday morning. The 1000, 2000, and 3000 mile points have dead lines, time stations in between do not. Caroline is cruising! We have had no stops to hold us up, nothing really negative, things are going quite smoothly, but the hardest section of RAAM (the last 1000 miles) is still ahead. Caroline is in great spirits with a great sense of humour about things which we all figured out quite quickly you need to have. The only problem that she is having at this point is her eyes are extreamly sore and dry. So she is using eye drops a lot. Other than this she is fine, and this morning at 4am we tucked her in for a 45 minute sleep and she was saying she felt fine, just tired. All in all things are great for her. All for now!

June ,15 : Another message from Virginia :

Well Caroline has reached it to mile 1679! Last night she reached the half way marker in Pratt Kansas, and that was quite the celebration! I was in the shuttle behind her and the support vehicle reqruited a parking lot of strangers to be her cheering crowd with our crew! I think she felt really good, she was on a real high with lots of smiles and hugs from everyone. Last night she had a good sleep, unfortunetly it was a very deep sleep and Caroline had a hard time getting going this morning, but she is doing really great now! She is through the prairies which she is thankful for because I think she was having a real problem with boredom on the bike! She had two straight days of nothing to look at but grass. We are not close to leaving Kansas and entering Missouri...One state at a time! It is amazing to watch Caroline! The crew is doing well and yesterday had some really random moments, we first stopped at the Bucklin Cafe in Bucklin where the awesome owners let Fred use their kitchen to cook Caroline her mini pancakes (can not remember what you call them?), and that was comical, we filmed every minute. In Pratt Kansas at the half way point the time station is at the Pratt MacDonald's. where the owners feed all RAAM riders/crew/media, etc for free! So when the owner asked Fred "what can I get for you?" His reply was, "a Big Mac and a shower!" So, the owner replied with "no problem" and took us to her house where we used their shower and swam in their pool at 11:30 at night! Random acts of kindness have gone a long way on this trip! Anyhow, that is all for now!

June, 13 : The first update from Caroline's crewmember Virginia Hastings :

So we are on Day 5 of RAAM with Caroline, she is currently cycling across the Mid West and is in the prairies of Kansas state. So far Caroline has cycled 1394 miles!Which converts to 2172 km!

In California we had a great start with two others, the other female rider who is ahead, and Richard Rupp, who unfortunately took a fall coming down the Colorado Rockies and is out of the race.

Caroline is doing well, she has of course had her moments, of ups and downs, but overall she is in good spirits. I don't know how she does it.

In an interview I did with Caroline yesterday she said getting to 1000 miles, was a great moment, and that overall she feels good. She is not experiencing any pain, in her back, neck, arms, etc. which she was surprised at, just her knees. It also helps that she has a massage therapist and Osteopath on board with her. Her pains mostly include the obvious, saddle sores.

In California we experienced a great first day, with no real issues, and then we headed into the Arizona heat, Caroline cycled for about 8 hours day 2 in the core 97 degree heat. The Arizona Desert seemed like an endless battle for the crew, so I can not imagine what it felt like for the cyclists!

We have also gone through Day three was a big day as Caroline climbed 10,000 feet on her bike to the highest point of RAAM (which was in Colorado), remembering that these cyclists do this after spending two days biking through the desert heat. That evening Caroline reached the 1000 mile cut off, there are three stations that have to be met on time or the rider is disqualified; 1000, 2000, and 3000 mile markers.

Although she made the 1000 mile marker in time, she was given an extension due to the unsafe wind conditions that we experienced in the plains of New Mexico before the check point, where Caroline could literally not stay on her bike because the wind was so strong, the local station said that it was 40 miles per hour with gusts of 70 miles an hour, so during this "pause" of the clock, which RAAM officials will only do due to "Acts of God" Caroline took advantage of sleep and had her first real sleep, a few hours.

So then, we made it to the check point, and the clock was stopped again, and all riders wer held at the checkpoint because out on the highway was a car of dead beats that were attacking the cyclists of RAAM with sticks, and one of the riders was attacked particularly bad, he was hit over the head, his helmet cracked, and he was taken to the hospital, but returned the course.
In the mean time while that was happening the same people were high jacking the RV of that team. So, that was another three hour stop of the clock, a blessing for rest time. But that was scary, it was a parking lot of cyclists, crews, and police cars.

The first few days Caroline had a hard time sleeping and probably slept for twenty minutes on average a day.

The crew is amazing. We are all really enjoying each others company, Andrew, Caroline's trainer is doing a great job, as is crew chief Marjolaine. We work well together and have been told many times by Caroline how much she appreciates her great crew.

We have cruised through California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and now we are in Kansas.

I will try to update in the next 2 days.

Thanks!!!

Virginia Hastings

June, 13 ; again a short report from the RAAM site:

Time: 13:00 EDT Oklahoma posted by Lindsay McCormick At 11pm local time, we began our night patrol of the flat plains of Oklahoma. The wind was gusting as we came across Rob Morlock, Daniel Rudge, Caroline van de Bulk, Doug Levy and later, Ryan Correy. It seems the theme of the night is ‘Ugh!' as our riders deal with problems ranging from some seriously strong head winds, sore throats, cold weather, even dead iPods- not to mention the general physical and mental exhaustion that comes with biking over 1,000 miles. The racers are holding strong though! Through thick and thin, tail winds or head winds, Morlock, Rudge, van du Bulk, Levy and Correy are pedaling on to Kansas.

June, 12 : Two pictures from the Raam site ...leaving the Rocky Mountains in Northeastern New Mexico:

June, 12 ; a short report from the RAAM site:

Time: 20:06 EST  -  Taos, NM

Just after the TS in Antonito, CO, we came upon 2nd place solo women's rider Canadian Caroline van den Bulk and her two crew vehicles stopped. A 30-40 mph West wind was so strong that she almost was blown over walking (with her bicycle) two miles from the time station. A crew member told us she was sleeping inside a vehicle, and that they may have to wait out the wind storm until evening. There was talk about getting her a heavy mountain bike to keep her light body from being blown over. The wind feels as strong as that wind that plagued riders across Kansas in 2006, but at least it is a West wind so there is only a 30 mile section of the route heading directly South (crosswind) until the route turns Southeast to Taos, NM.
